The Secret to Variegated Plants (& My Pink Grow Lights)
Variegated plants look cool, but they can be a handful. Because the white parts of the leaves don't have chlorophyll, they can't make energy from the sun. This means the green parts have to work double-time to keep the whole plant alive.
Main rule: Light is key. If a variegated plant sits in a dark corner, it might "revert"—basically turning fully green again just to survive. The plant will always choose survival over looking pretty for your living room.
On the flip side, you have to be careful with direct sun. Those beautiful white parts burn really easily and turn into crispy brown spots. Bright, indirect light is usually the sweet spot.
The Grow Light Journey (And My Accidental Pink Setup)
Getting that perfect "bright, indirect light" in a Danish apartment is difficult, especially when the darker months start rolling in. Because of this, I decided to invest in some grow lights to help my collection through the winter.
I specifically ordered white grow lights because I wanted the setup to look somewhat natural in my living room. But when I got them home and plugged them in, the light was intensely purple—or rather, pink! It turned out the webshop's supplier had changed the product without the webshop even knowing, so the white lights I wanted weren't even an option to buy anymore.
So, now I just have a totally pink setup at home. It looks a bit wild, but honestly, it's okay!
I'm still figuring out the technical side of things. For instance, I'm not entirely sure if the distance from the hanging lights to the plants is 100% correct in terms of how much light they actually need. It's definitely a learning process.
I've seen some people in the plant community use smart devices to measure exactly how much light the leaves are getting. But I am much more into keeping this as a casual hobby. I don't really have the need to check if my setup is scientifically perfect—which I guess is kind of a funny thing to say when I literally have glowing pink grow lights hanging from my ceiling, lol!
